There are about 2 million lakes in the world, of different species and each with its own beauty, which we certainly will not be able to get to know up close in our lives. That’s why we give priority to 6 beautiful and popular lakes, to get started.
In the emerald waters of Lake Königssee
In the south-east of Germany, in the Berchtesgadener region, near the border with Austria, this lake is one of the deepest and cleanest in Europe. Located in the Berchtesgaden National Park, it stretches for 8 km and is surrounded by the limestone formations of Mount Watzmann and the Bavarian Alps. Those lucky enough to be in the area can go boating in its emerald waters until the 17th-century church of St Bartholomä, a quiet place that once belonged to the kings of Bavaria.
In the unreal setting on Plitvice Lakes
Not one, not two, but a complex of 16 lakes hidden under dense vegetation awaits visitors in the Plitvice National Park of Croatia, in a place of unparalleled natural beauty, with waterfalls, crystal lakes, special formations and lots of greenery. It is located in the mountainous region that stretches from central Croatia on the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina and is an ideal destination for any season. The park was founded in 1949 and since 1979 is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and before the pandemic received about one million visitors a year. The park is also home to deer, wildcats, wild boars, wolves and bears, while it is worth following the path to Veliki Slap, the tallest waterfall in the area, 70 meters high.
In the vineyards and beautiful cities around Lake Geneva
East of Geneva is the largest lake in Western Europe, which stretches like a giant, wet mirror in the French-speaking canton of Vaud in southwestern Switzerland. It is known to most as Lake Geneva, but also as Lake Lehman, and on its northern shores lies the elegant city of Lausanne and several smaller, picturesque towns, as well as beautiful vineyards that reach the steep slopes of the Lavaux region. Almost on the lake, near Montreux, you will see the fairytale castle Château de Chillon, one of the many waiting for you to explore inland.
In the most famous lake in Italy, Lake Como
The lakes of Italy are most of exceptional beauty, but the one that steals the impressions for many is Lake Como for the wonderful background with the gardens, the beautiful hotels and the elegant Mediterranean villas. The southern shores of this brilliant lake are about 51 km from Milan, which means that you can make such a combination on your future trip to Italy. Thus, you will have the opportunity to see up close alpine landscapes, picturesque cities such as Bellagio, Varenna and Menaggio, but also beautiful beaches.
In the healing Dead Sea
Known for its healing properties, its salty water (9 times saltier than the ocean) and its rising, the Dead Sea is definitely a very special place and a special lake on the planet, on the border of Jordan and Israel. Despite its name, it is a lake and not a sea and in fact the deepest lake with salt water in the world, with a maximum depth of 300 meters. Apart from microorganisms, such as bacteria found in craters at its bottom, it does not allow anything else to survive in its waters. It is the lowest surface point on the mainland, with its surface being about 400 meters below the surface of the Mediterranean (negative altitude) and there is a significant drop in its level, about 1 meter per year, mainly due to the reduction of its runoff. Jordan River, but also of intense human activity.
In the second largest of the 5 Fuji lakes in Japan
Lake Kawaguchi is one of the 5 lakes that surround the famous Mount Fuji in Japan, in the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park and arguably the most beautiful, which also belongs to the Unesco list. Its shores remain for the most part virgin with amazing flora, which in autumn and spring, in the cherry season, creates a magnificent spectacle. And when there is no cloudiness, in the waters of the lake is reflected the sacred mountain, as if there is a huge, natural mirror.
